VIDEO: Firefighter dies while fighting massive blaze at Texas strip mall

San Antonio, Texas (KXAN) - One firefighter died in a massive strip mall fire on the northwest side of San Antonio Thursday night, near Ingram Park Mall.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood says Scott Deem died while trying to put out the flames. He was a six-year veteran of the San Antonio Fire Department.

Two other firefighters were transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment and expected to be okay.

Close to 60 firefighting units were at the scene of the fire Tlocated at 6776 Ingram Rd. San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood as his crews were inside, the structure collapsed, trapping Deem. Because the situation was becoming too dangerous, Hood said the rest of the firefighters had to evacuate the building, leaving Deem behind.

“I would like to ask the citizens of San Antonio for their prayers tonight, because we’re hurting,” Hood said as he fought back tears.

Once the fire was out and crews were able to remove Deem’s body, first responders lined the parking lot as his body was taken away.

There’s no word on what started the fire.
