UPDATE: 1 dead following 2-vehicle wreck in Hopkins County

HOPKINS COUNTY, Texas (KETK) - One person has died following a Monday afternoon accident in Hopkins County.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers responded to the two-vehicle wreck near the Birthright community, about a mile north of Sulphur Springs, around 4:15 p.m.

DPS says the crash, involving an SUV and a pick-up truck, occurred as both were traveling south on State Highway 19.

The preliminary crash report indicates the SUV side-swiped the pick-up when it traveled back onto the road after veering off the roadway.

The SUV, again, went off the road and into a bar-ditch after hitting the truck. The SUV then rolled over on its roof and was partially submerged in a creek.

The driver of the SUV, Michael Owen, 52, and Jennifer Owen, 47, both of Garland, were taken to a Tyler hospital. Michael was pronounced dead at 11:37 p.m.

Six children (ages 5, 7, 11,13, 14 and 15) were initially taken to a hospital in Sulphur Springs. Four of the children were treated and released. The 15-year-old female and the 14-year-old male were then taken to a Dallas medical center.

The driver of the truck, identified as Alain Gutierrez, 20, and a 16-year-old male passenger, both of Sulphur Springs, were not injured.
