Tornado rips through northern Nacogdoches County

Garrison, Texas (KETK) - Storms ripped through northern Nacogdoches in the Appleby, Garrison, and Timpson areas on Thursday.

The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF 2 tornado touched down. A short drive through the town is all it takes to see debris scattered throughout.

A hardware store was reduced to rubble, another building lost its roof and the towering pecan trees that cover the area fell atop many homes.

"It was pretty intense for about 10-15 seconds," said Terry Patterson, Garrison resident.

Patterson and his wife were watching the weather reports knowing they were in the path of the storm. Eventually they lost power so they turned to their cell phones when they heard the alarm.

"It said seek shelter immediately," Patterson said. "We have a safe place in our closet, we were in there no less than 20 seconds and it hit."

After a while Patterson decided to take a look outside and assess the damage, he was relieved to find his home was without damage.

"The only damage we had was to our travel trailer," he said. "Trees laid, they couldn't have laid no better. I'm very thankful for that and I'm thankful me and my wife coming out of it.

Multiple large trees were down in his yard and he was unable to leave as his driveway was completely covered.

After his experience Patterson knew just how lucky he was to come out unscathed.

"Pay attention to the weather," he said. "When they say 'seek shelter immediately' please do, please do."
