Texas jury finds registered sex offender guilty of sexually assaulting child during church outing

Foard County, Texas (KFDX) - A Foard County jury sentenced a registered sex offender to life in prison with no parole for his latest sex crimes with a child.

Ronald Ray Chappell, 59, was found guilty Wednesday night after the jury deliberated for 15 minutes.

The jurors then spent about the same amount of time deliberating his punishment.

Chappell was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl and another teen during a church outing.

Authorities say the assaults came to light after two students in Crowell told their parents. The girls told them about being sexually assaulted during the church event.

The victims were then taken to Patsy's House in Wichita Falls for interviews. The children said the assaults happened in January and May of 2016.

Texas Ranger, Bo Brown interviewed Chappell last May and says Chappell first denied the allegations.
He claimed the first assault was with his finger and it was an accident that occurred while they were "roughhousing." He said the second time, he was asleep and just "woke up to find his finger there."

Because Chappell has prior offenses including sexual assaults of children, aggravated rape and fondling, District Attorney Staley Heatly asked the jury for life without parole, to which the jury agreed.
