Texas county makes list of 50 most religious counties in nation

TERRELL COUNTY, Texas (KETK) - A West Texas county has ranked as one of the 50 most religious counties in the nation, according to a story in USA Today.

Terrell County, between Fort Stockton and Del Rio, came in at number 43 on a list with data compiled by 24/7 Wall St., a business and technology site that contributes articles to a number of online publications.

24/7 Wall St. said it compiled its list "by reviewing the number of Americans who worship in every county as a percentage of the county’s total population to identify the most religious county in every state."

It found that every state has at least one county where the number of those who claim to be religious is equal to at least 45 percent of the overall population.

In all but five counties on this list, it said, religious service attendees number more than half the county’s population.

The most religious county in America, according to the list, is Jefferson County, Alabama, where 83.9. percent of the county population claims to attend religious services.

The numbers that put Terrell County at number 43 include:

  •  Religious service attendance: 109.7.% of county pop.
  •  Religious service attendance: 55.7% of state pop. (10th highest)
  •  Congregations in county: 81 per 10,000 people
  •  Congregations in state: 11 per 10,000 people (21st lowest)

The 2010 census listed Terrell County's population as 984. Wikipedia puts it at the eighth-least populous county in Texas, and the 37th-least populous county in the nation.
