Son of East Texas coaching legend named new Alto Head Football Coach, Athletic Director

ALTO, Texas (KETK) - Alto Independent School District is getting a new Head Football Coach and Athletic Director from legendary East Texas coaching bloodlines.

Ricky Jo Meeks, 34, the son of the iconic Dickey Meeks, has been named Alto's new Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. The official announcement will come during a special called school board meeting at 12:00 p.m.

Meeks will succeed Paul Gould.

Gould, who previously served as Alto's offensive coordinator before becoming head coach, took over for Keith Gardner in 2012. The Yellow Jackets won back-to-back 1A State Championships in 2006 and 2007, also going undefeated (14-0) both of those years under Gardner.

Alto went 4-7 in 2017, falling to Lovelady in the first round of the playoffs.

"It will be our goal to give Alto an athletic program and football program we will be proud of," Meeks tells KETK Reagan Roy. "One that will compliment the tradition Alto has been so proud of through the years."

Before accepting the position at Alto, Meeks served as the offensive coordinator for the Tatum Eagles. Prior to making the move to Tatum, Meeks saw stints at Pittsburg and Henderson, where he worked alongside his father.

Meeks also played football for two noteworthy NCAA programs.

As a pro-style quarterback coming out of Mount Vernon High School, Meeks signed with Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He stayed at SMU for one year before making the transition to Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where he would continue his athletic career playing for the Demons.

Meeks' experience as a player and coach, as well as the knowledge passed down to him from his father, have been contributing factors in the amount of success he has had in his coaching career.

His father, Dickey, officially retired from coaching on December 16, 2016, after 42 years in the business.

The elder Meeks won state championships at Chapel Hill (1989) over A&M Consolidated and Henderson (2010) over Chapel Hill.
