'Smallville' actress Allison Mack arrested in cult case

NEW YORK, New York (WTEN) -

Actress Allison Mack was arrested in connection to the alleged cult NXIVM on Friday.

Mack, 35, of Brooklyn, N.Y., appeared in Eastern District Federal Court Friday afternoon.  She is facing trafficking charges for her involvement in NXIVM.

She is known for her roles as Chloe Sullivan on the WB/CW series Smallville and as Amanda on the FX series Wilfred.

Keith Raniere, 57, of Waterford, N.Y., is the leader of the cult that masquerades as a self-group, was arraigned on similar charges last week.

According to a federal complaint, Raniere and Mack allegedly branded their victims and forced them to participate in sex acts.

An indictment was also unsealed on Friday in federal court.

“As alleged in the indictment, Allison Mack recruited women to join what was purported to be a female mentorship group that was, in fact, created and led by Keith Raniere,” stated United States Attorney Richard Donoghue.  “The victims were then exploited, both sexually and for their labor, to the defendants’ benefit.  This Office and our law enforcement partners are committed to prosecuting  predators who victimize others through sex trafficking and forced labor.”

Last month, Raniere was arrested in Mexico.

If convicted, Raniere and Mack face mandatory minimum sentences of 15 years to life in prison.
