REPORT: Los Angeles to host 2028 Summer Olympic Games

Official announcement expected Monday evening

LOS ANGELES (KETK) - On Monday, the City of Los Angeles is expected to announce they will host the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.

The Los Angeles Times reports the "City of Angels" has reached an agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) paving the way for the United States to host the Summer Games for the first time since the 1996 Games in Atlanta. An official announcement is set for 7:00 p.m. CT.

LA last hosted the Games in 1984. They also played host in 1932.

The negotiation also opens up the door for Paris to host the Summer Games in 2024, marking the centennial anniversary of the last time the city hosted the event in 1924.

In early July, the IOC unanimously voted to award the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics at the same time, as they had two strong host city candidates in LA and Paris. reports the last time two host cities were determined at the same time was in 1921. With that agreement, Paris was awarded the 1924 Games and Amsterdam played host to the 1928 Games.

The United States last hosted the Olympic Games in 2002 (Winter Olympics - Salt Lake City, Utah).
