Police K-9 fundraiser scam circulating in East Texas

MARSHALL, Texas (KETK) - The Harrison County Sheriff's Office is getting out the word about a new scam con artists are using to take cash out of the public's pocket.

The scammers are claiming they are with the Harrison County Sheriff's Office and local police departments. The caller tells the victim they are seeking donations to help purchase drug trained dogs, due to depleted budgets.

One con man even told a victim the department was trying to get funds to replace an entire aging K-9 unit. However, the target of the scam was a current officer's wife. She pressed the man for more information until he dropped the call.

Harrison County Sheriff’s Office reminds the community telephone solicitors are very persuasive and will continue to engage you in conversation, if you allow them. Do not fall into the trap of talking with them and simply hang up on them. The caller ID will indicate a telephone number from the United States, however, these types of callers are typically in the Caribbean and outside of the jurisdiction of the United States. If you voluntarily give them any money, you will most likely be unable to recover it.
