Olympics organizers confirm cyber attack, won't reveal source

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (KETK) - The Winter Olympics were hit by a cyber attack during Friday's opening ceremony, officials confirmed to multiple media outlets Sunday.

International Olympic Committee spokesperson Mark Adams told multiple outlets that "maintaining secure operations is our purpose," adding that, "we are making sure our systems are secure, and they are secure," according to Reuters.

The Games’ systems, including the internet and television services, were affected by the hack two days ago but organizers said it had not compromised any critical part of their operations.

They also would not reveal the source of the attack.

“Maintaining secure operations is our purpose,” said Adams. “We are not going to comment on the issue. It is one we are dealing with. We are making sure our systems are secure and they are secure.”

Asked if organizers knew who was behind the attack, Adams said: “I certainly don’t know. But best international practice says that you don’t talk about an attack.”

Buzzfeed reports that, for about 45 minutes on Friday night, some Olympic computers and networks, including Wi-Fi systems, were hit with malicious software that targeted users with a @pyeongchang2018.com email address.

“We can confirm that the technology issues experienced on Friday night were caused by a cyber-attack,” Jihye Lee, a spokesperson for the 2018 games, said in a statement. No systems were affected, and organizers are still investigating, she said.

Prior to the Games, some cyber-security experts had expressed concern that countries like Russia and North Korea might try to target the event, according to the BBC.

The Russian Foreign Ministry denied rumors that Russian hackers were involved.

"We know that Western media are planning pseudo-investigations on the theme of 'Russian fingerprints' in hacking attacks on information resources related to the hosting of the Winter Olympic Games in the Republic of Korea," the foreign ministry told the BBC.
