No prom for John Tyler High School senior

Denied permission to take girlfriend

TYLER, Tx (KETK) - Many young ladies dream about their senior prom; what they'll wear and and who they will go with.

A John Tyler High School senior is seeing that dream shatter before her eyes.

She has the perfect dress and her dream date.

They've been together for two and a half years.

These are all part of Merary Melchor's ultimate prom night.

"I was just really excited that it really fit me very well and it's very beautiful, and it kind of expresses more of me into the dress," said Melchor.

Sydney Aparicio, a Robert E. Lee freshman and Melchor's girlfriend is frustrated.

"We struggled a lot just to scrape up all the money we could just to get everything we have," Aparicio said. "It's highly upsetting me."

John Tyler refused the girls tickets twice even after getting permission from an administrator at the school.

The school tells us Merary missed a deadline on an application that would have allowed Aparicio to attend.

Aparicio's mother, Jessica Aparicio, tells us a different story.

"Are you discriminating against them," asked Aparicio. "And they said no, absolutely not, she can go. They said they didn't want any gang fights. I said gang fights? They're gay! If that's the case, you're discriminating, they said oh no, she's more than welcome to find somebody else to go with."

A statement local Tyler lawyer, Blake Bailey can't believe.

"I cannot imagine, John Tyler High School, who went through so many heart-rending campaigns for the rights of their students over these years," said Bailey. "To take a position on a another statistical difference in our people ... is shocking to me."

The girls aren't giving up hope to enjoy a magical prom night.
