FRUITVALE, Tx - Fruitvale ISD announced on Facebook classes were canceled for the remainder of the year for high school students Friday afternoon, due to damage caused by tornadoes that hit East Texas in April.
Tornado damage in the high school could not be corrected without tearing the walls, to remove moisture in the building according to the district. Every classroom with an outer wall will need repairing.
Fruitvale Superintendent Rebecca Bain says TEA Commissioner Mike Morath is waving the rest of the school year for high school students.
Middle and elementary students will have class until May 24. The district still plans to hold end of year events for high school students.
Repairs are expected to be complete by August before the new school year, according to Principal Charles Harford.
