Hackers sending fake city of Palestine emails

PALESTINE, Texas (KETK) - The City of Palestine is warning the public about fake emails being sent by scammers through city accounts.

According to the city, they were comprised earlier this year during a network hack. Email contacts were stolen from city email, but no other data, including personal financial information, was stolen or accessed during the cyber attack.

Several residents have since received email from fake city of Palestine personnel. The city says if anyone gets an invoice from a city email to not click on the link. The address leads to a phishing scam the hackers use to steal information.

The City of Palestine does not send invoices via email. All invoices and statements from the city are sent using regular mail.

The city stated they will be working with network technicians to prevent future issues.
