WOOD COUNTY, Texas (KETK) - A man wanted for the murder of his son was recently arrested in Lubbock County, according to the Wood County Sheriff's Office.
According to online records, George Wayne Saunders, 62, of Mineola, was indicted in Wood County for murder on May 31.
Saunders was first arrested for manslaughter back in 2011 after his child Loren Saunders died from a gunshot wound to the chest at the Chaney Point RV Park in Alba. At the time of his death, Saunders told investigators he walked in on his 16-year-old son twirling a revolver when the gun fired.
The shooting was initially ruled accidental. In May 2011, the Medical Examiner's Office labeled the death suspicious.
In late 2011, an arrest warrant was issued for Saunders on a charge of manslaughter. He failed to turn himself in and was arrested after he was found December 2, 2011, at a Mineola Walmart. Saunders was released the following day.
Court records show the manslaughter case never proceeded past an examining trial in late December 2011.
The case resurfaced in February 2015 when former Wood County Sheriff Jim Brown reopened the investigation following additional interviews and review of forensic evidence. He was arrested and charged with murder, only to be released again in May 2015.
Saunders is awaiting extradition back to Wood County. Judicial records show an arraignment hearing set for August 4 in the 402nd District Court.
