Nacogdoches, Texas (KETK) - Big news for a youngster here in East Texas, Kash Martin from Pollok will be heading to Las Vegas...but not to gamble.
Instead he will be competing in the Junior National Finals Rodeo and he's the only East Texan competing on the big stage.
He will be competing in the bare-back riding portion of the event something the 13 year old has only been doing for about two years.
"It was hard at the start, then I started getting the hang of it," he said
Kash has been running with the rodeo crowd for most of his life, bare-back riding was just another step for the young cowboy.
"I saw it on TV and I just liked to try it, then I fell in love with it," said Kash Martin.
He isn't the first member of the martin family to succeed in the rodeo arena, his older sister has likewise competed since she was young and even earned a rodeo scholarship.
"It's cool that I've done all this but it's even cooler to watch my little brother get to live his dream that he's wanting to do and I'm proud of him," said Mersadie Martin, Kash's older sister.
Kash actually took a break from rodeo for a few years but either inspiration from his sister's accomplishments, and perhaps a bit of an old fashioned sibling rivalry, he's back at it.
"I guess I sparked him or something and he decided that riding bucking horses is what he wanted to do." said Mersadie Martin. "So that's kind of how he got started and he hasn't quit yet."
The rodeo in Las Vegas is the biggest there is but in the stands, his support group from home.
"Man, my wife and my daughter their voice carries over everybody in the world," said Deris Martin, Kash's father. "If anybody see on TV you'll probably hear them screaming when he goes."
Deris says he will be proud of his son no matter what but Kash says if he wins there is one this he must do....
"I'd rub it in my sister's face," he said.
