Driveway scheme pops up in Wood County

Quitman, Texas (KETK) - A repaving scheme targeting the people of Wood County, the sheriff says these con artists want to resurface your driveway.

It's an older scheme, people claim they work for the county or private company and want to lay fresh asphalt on your driveway.

The scammers typically will start off by knocking on your door and give the unsuspecting homeowner an offer that seems too good to be true.

"Typically they will claim that they've got some materials left over from a job maybe down the street so they can offer you a really good price to get your driveway repaved," said Mechele Mills, President/CEO BBB Central East Texas.

Sheriff Tom Castloo took to Facebook to warn people and let them know it's not true.

"The county doesn't work on private property," said Sheriff Tom Castloo. "If we have any material left over we're going to make good use of it because naturally we have to be good conservatives of what the county gives us."

These thieves will find an excuse to leave after getting the money, or just lay a paper thin layer of asphalt on your driveway.
Mills says people have been out $15,000 in the past with this scheme.

She says always to know who you are dealing with.

"You always take a chance when you are not initiating contact with the company you want to do business with," said Mills. "So if they're approaching you it's more important that you do research."

If they are trying to rip you off call the police.

"There's a special place for people like that and it just so happens that we have one that has 158 beds and a few openings," said Sheriff Castloo.

A place where they can go so you can you rest easy.
