Davin Nelson named head head football coach, athletic director at Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD

DAINGERFIELD, Texas (KETK) - The current co-defensive coordinator at Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District has been named the Tigers' new head football coach and athletic director.

Davin Nelson was approved for the position following a 5-2 vote at Wednesday night's special board meeting.

The meeting began at 6:00 p.m., with closed session for deliberation on candidates for the position. The gathering adjourned around midnight.

Nelson and Tenaha's Craig Horn were the two finalists the board voted on to succeed former head coach Michael Waldie who left Daingerfield earlier this year to take the offensive coordinator position at Pearland.

Prior to taking over at Daingerfield, Waldie amassed a 13-8 record in two seasons at Woodville.

Waldie replaced ex-AD/HC Aric Sardinea, who compiled a 38-28 record in his five seasons with the Tigers. Sardinea led the Tigers after taking over for Barry Bowman, who won three consecutive 2A State Championships in his three years at the helm.

Daingerfield has played in nine State Championship games with an overall State Title record of 6-3.

Nelson was brought on at Daingerfield by Waldie in 2016. Nelson also coached under Waldie at Woodville and Jacksonville.

Nelson has 12 years of coaching experience with five of those being in a coordinator capacity.

Prior to Nelson's hire, Daingerfield residents started a petition to hire former head coach Dennis Alexander following his departure from Troup.

Last week, Alexander learned he did not make the cut as one of the top two finalists.
