TYLER, Texas (KETK) - Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth has been getting many requests for care in the East Texas zip codes, leading them to open a specialized clinic in Tyler.
"We purposefully came out with services that are not being offered because we're trying to fill that need for the community," Asst. VP for Primary and Specialty Services Beau McNeff said.
Specialists can travel to Tyler to see patients so the families don't have to drive out of town. They're offering a wide variety of specialization.
"Right now we have endicronology, hematology, oncology and pediatric surgery that are already doing rotations," McNeff said. "We've already seen more than 50 kids in the last few weeks."
Still to come are urology, genetics and possibly G.I.
Other physicians in the area are excited to be able to refer patients to this clinic.
"It's a big need for emergency rooms, for hospitals, for all of us to be able to have good communication and closer care for all of our patients," Hospitality Health E.R. Director Dr. Jeffrey Beers said.
For immediate needs when doctors can't make it to Tyler, they can still see patients through their telemedicine program.
"He'd be standing there, he'd be able to use our equipment over here on the wall that has a stethescope and some other devices and you get diagnostic quality sounds," McNeff said.
He says it's just like the doctor being there.
"Instead of driving 3, 4 hours why not drive 3, 4 blocks?" McNeff said. "And that's really what we're bringing to this community is the ability to get the same level of care you would in fort worth, you can get right here at home."
If you want to make an appointment, you can go through your child's pediatrician who will refer you.
