PALESTINE, Texas (KETK) - There's a new tourist attraction coming soon to the city of Palestine, an adult-only RV park, where you don't even have to wear clothes. It is a private community for members only and is gated.
The Purple Peacock RV Resort is drawing many mixed emotions from that community. KETK had an interview set up with the owner, but once we got there they decided Wednesday was not a good time.
About 10 miles down U.S. Highway 84 from the park is Alesia and Rhonda Thomas' store, The Cuckoo's Nest.
"It started to just to be a corner store and bakery and it has turned into a hamburger joint," said Rhonda Thomas.
They've heard it all, as people drop in talking about the new adult-only park.
"Ya know, it's something really different for Palestine," said Rhonda. "Personally, I wouldn't go down there, but there may be other people that like it."
"We had a customer come in and that's how we found about it. He said, 'I'm moving to a new RV park just right down from y'all because the RV park I'm in now is becoming clothing optional and I am not down for that,'" said Alesia.
However, Alesia said she thinks it could be good for their small community.
"Any kind of business that's going to pull money into Palestine is going to be good. As long as they have their clothes on, I'll be good with it," she said.
"There's not much else around here. I don't think it'll last," said Andy Thomas, Alesia's husband. "But, they can do whatever they want to do."
Others see that as one of the park's biggest advantages.
"I thought it was cool, something different, something new for Palestine," said resident Stephen Lindsay. "There's not really much here."
While some think it could taint their city's reputation.
"It's a hometown feel, and I dont think it's appropriate at all," said resident Alexis Burnett.
Back at The Cuckoo's Nest, Alesia said "to each its own."
"I think it's going to be its own private thing, I really do. I don't think Palestine is going to be known for the Purple Peacock all of a sudden."
The Purple Peacock RV Resort is opening Memorial Day weekend.
