CAUGHT ON CAM: Burglar breaks into truck at Longview home

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) - The search is on for a Longview burglar whose act was caught on camera.

He stole a pistol and other items after breaking into one man's truck and his roommate's car.

Cory Fopay, the homeowner said, "Looking back, I should have locked hte door. I should have closed the garage."

It was 5:30 in the morning on Saturday when Fopay said he got home from the gym.

Minutes later, he nearly came face to face with the intruder.

"The camera that caught the video is my outdoor camera," said Fopay.

The video shows the thief breaking into Fopay's truck.

After coming up empty, he goes into the garage looking for me.

"While he was in there he was fumbling around, that's when he accidentally hit the garage door opener," said Fopay.

The noise of the garage scared the burglar off. He ran away with a handgun and a set of keys.

He made enough noise to alert Fopay who was on the other side of the door.

"That's when I grabbed a pistol and came in here. At this point I'm coming out here with a gun. He has a gun because he just stole it. It had the potential to be a bad situation for either me or him," said Fopay.

Due to the weekend showers, it wasn't until Monday when the Longview Police Department could check for prints.

Mixing black powder, spreading it, placing tape and peeling it to reveal finger prints on the vehicle.

Longview Police Department public information officer Shane McCarter said, "Just kind of like you see it done on television. Then our detectives turn it in and then our physical evidence specialists will then take and compare those prints and identify who it was that touched the vehicle.

The thief is still free and could strike again, but Fopay said he's thankful because things could have been much worse.

"Had it gone down hte wrong way, it could have really altered a lot of people's lives that day. I was just seconds from being face to face with him. It's not worth it. Not over a couple hundred dollars of stuff," said Fopay.

The Longview Police Department are investigating.

We will continue to update as more information becomes available.
