LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) - The Kilgore Fire Department is hosting its fifth annual SAFFE Day on September 17. This event is for children and adults with special needs. They will be welcomed with a red carpet entrance to a festival full of local heroes.
The Kilgore Fire Department says 'Everyday Heroes' are welcome to this special abilities family fun event. The department has already started preparing games and creating new challenges for children and adults. The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Commerce Street in Kilgore. They say every year, the carnival grows larger, and last year they had more than 3,000 people. The Assistant Fire Chief, Mike Simmons, says they hope to make their fifth SAFFE Day another successful and fun learning experience.
"SAFFE Day stands for Special Abilities Family Fun Event and it's a day that our Fire Chief just had on his heart, that he wanted to have a day where you just treat folks and their families to a special day. It's a chance to come in and hang out with the firemen," said Simmons.
They also plan to show a 2015 documentary on the 'Everyday Heroes' at 4 p.m. He expressed the meaning behind the catch phrase.
"Folks forget that we can impact lives, so it's just a catch phrase that just caught on. now we use it every day no matter what your disability is, what you ability is, what you look like. You have the potential to be a hero every day," said Simmons.
SAFFE Day is still recruiting volunteers and vendors for the free public event. If you would like more information on the event click here: //www.facebook.com/SAFFEDay/.
